CiteSmart Toolbar

The toolbar contains all the major functions. You can customize the toolbar from the Preferences menu (From the CiteSmart Edit menu, click “Preferences” and choose “Layout Options”).

Tool

Quick Description

Cite Reference . Inserts the selected reference(s) in the active document. The reference must be in the "My References" category. Note that Labeled references are also in "My References"

Create/Update Bibliographic Index . The bibliographic index will be updated or created (if it doesn't exist). It will be created at the end of the document. Each update will replace the index. If the user moves the index, its position won't be modified upon an update.

Update & Pre-Format all . The bibliographic elements will be formatted in a near-final appearance. Duplicate citations will not be resolved with this tool. This is done with the Finalize tool.

Finalize the document . Finalization IS NOT reversible. It is recommended that the user saves the document beforehand. CiteSmart will then make a copy of the document and finalize the copy, leaving the original document intact. During this step, citation duplication is resolved (i.e. Smith et al., 2005a; Smith et al.,2005b). Letters a,b,c are added after the date to distinguish between publications with the same citation.

Refresh Internet Explorer (IE) Connection. It will open an IE window (if one isn't already open) pointing to Medline. Otherwise it will refresh the connection between CiteSmart to ALL IE WINDOWS. This allows the CiteClick and RefClick buttons to appear on the webpage. If you don't see these buttons, then use this function and reload the webpage.

Refresh Mozilla FireFox (FF) Connection.Unlike for IE, this will not open a FF window. It will refresh the connection between CiteSmart to ALL FF WINDOWS. This allows the CiteClick and RefClick buttons to appear on the webpage within FF. If you don't see these buttons, then use this function and reload the webpage.

Refresh Word Connection.Used to connect CiteSmart to the Word toolbar. This is necessary For each new word application open. We recommend that only one document be used at a time, however multiple documents are supported. When CiteSmart starts, the Word toolbar of the active document is automatically connected to CiteSmart. Documents opened using the "Open" or "New" commands from the File Menu of Word will have their toolbars automatically connected.

Open an existing Library.CiteSmart libraries are SQL databases using the SQLite3 format. They have the extension " .lcs" (Library for CiteSmart).

Create a New Library.A username is required. In future versions of CiteSmart, libraries maybe shared between multiple users over a local network. At this time, the username has little importance.

Search PubMed.This will open a dialog box to perform a basic PubMed search. Additionally, Medline can also be searched directly from Word or from the Fold Panel.

Edit Citations.Edit citations in the active word document. This will also "uncouple" the edited reference(s) and the bibliographic index. Read important considerations for this function.

Rebuild library from Word document .If a Word document contains citations that retain their field codes (ALT+F9 will reveal presence of field codes) inserted with EndNote, Reference Manager, or Bibus, CiteSmart can rebuild the library with all the Medline articles cited in the document.
