CiteSmart Quick Start Guide

Congratulations on your purchase! CiteSmart is simply THE BEST software for PubMed related bibliographic work. To get started as quickly as possible, please follow these 12 easy steps:

- Install CiteSmart and the CiteSmart Toolbar for Microsoft Word.

- Start Microsoft Word or open an existing Word document.

- Start CiteSmart. When CiteSmart is started for the first time, you will be asked to create a library. Choose a user name and a library name and then click “Create Library”.

- You may minimize CiteSmart.

- Go to your Word document. For simplicity, please make sure only one Word document is open.

- Type the keywords that you would normally enter in a PubMed search directly into your Word document.

- Highlight the keywords and click on the “Search PubMed” button in the Word Toolbar.

An Internet Explorer (IE) window should open. If IE doesn’t start, then from the CiteSmart main window go to the Toolbox menu, click “Refresh Word Connection”, and retry. IE should open the PubMed website with results corresponding to your search. In front of each reference should be a pair of CiteClick and RefClick buttons. If these elements do not appear, then from the CiteSmart main window go to the Toolbox menu, click “Refresh IE Connection”, and reload the web page.

- To insert a reference directly into your Word document, click on the CiteClick button . This will also save the reference in your library ("My References").

- To insert a reference into your library for later use, click on the RefClick button . Like with CiteClick, RefClick will also save the reference in your library (‘My References’).

- To create a bibliographic index in your Word document, click on (or from the CiteSmart main window, go to the MSWord menu, and click “Update Bibliographic Index”).

- To preview the final format of your bibliography, click on (or from the CiteSmart main window, go to the MSWord menu, and click “Update and Pre-Format all”).

- When your document is complete, go to the CiteSmart MSWord menu and click "Finalize". Operations such as duplicate resolution (i.e. Smith et al.,2005a and Smith et al.,2005b) will be performed.
