Style Creation: Tips
CiteSmart comes with several
utilities to make your work easier when creating a style. Here are some tips
to keep in mind to fully exploit the style creation utilities.
1- Before creating a style,
make sure to know if the style is numbered or uses a Harvard Template (Albert
et al., 1953)
2- Go to CiteSmart menu
Toolbox>Journal Styles> New Style>[Numbered/Harvard]. (Read
more about how to create a style.)
3- Go through the style
wizard till the last page is reached ( the bibliographic index template). Using
the last page of the wizard, create the template only for the publication
type 'ARTICLE' and press 'Finish'.
The style will later be modified and the template implemented for relevant publication
type.
4- To name the style,
use the Medline Abbreviation of the journal name (Read
more about journal name formatting). This is the standard implemented in
CiteSmart and this is useful whenever the style is to retrieved using the CiteSmart
search functions.

Note: once the style
is saved, it also becomes the current style (style in use). Now it is possible
to modify each section of the style (corresponding to each page of the wizard).
To do so, go the menu Toolbox>Journal Styles> Modify Style>[style
section]. Read more about style sections.
5- Now it is time to modify
the bibliographic template for each publication type. For most of the journals,
the publication type for which a style has to be implemented are: ARTICLES,
INPRESS (articles in press), BOOKS, INBOOK (Book section or chapter), SUPPLEMENT
(Articles published in supplement). Usually these publications should be easily
accessible and editors usually recommend to avoid citing other types of publication
like MASTERTHESIS, CONFERENCE PROCEEDINGS and others (all available in CiteSmart).
Some publication types
are very close in the bibliographic template they will have. For example ARTICLES
and INPRESS will have the same template except for the pages and volume fields
that will be replaced in INPRESS by the mention 'in press'
for instance. Similarly for BOOK and INBOOK, their template will be very close.
INBOOK will usually have an additional 'Title' field and the
text 'in:'.
A function has been implemented
to copy the bibliographic index from a publication type to another. To use it:
go to menu Toolbox>Journal Styles> Modify Style>Change the
Bibliographic Index. At the bottom of the page there is a button called
'Copy Settings From:'. This will copy the bibliographic index
from a publication type 2 (here
ARTICLE, see picture below) to the current publication type 1
(INPRESS, see picture below).

With this 'Copy Settings
From:', there is no need to redefine the bibliographic index for each type.
Choose the most similar, copy the settings and then modify the template.
